Finger painting is another kinesthetic, in-the-moment point on the expressive therapies continuum. Children find it relaxing and expressive. Those who enjoy finger painting revel in its squishy feel and delight in mixing colors. It is fun to watch children start out with one finger and end up with both hands in the paint.
Finger painting as we know it was invented by North Carolina native, educator and art therapist Ruth Faison Shaw (1888-1969). Darwin Marable’s paper on the work of the First Lady of Finger Painting is at http://www.worldandi.com/subscribers/feature_detail.asp?num=25220
